Nicola was adopted as a baby. At 16, she was a typical angst-ridden teenager. Her adoptive parents felt they could not deal with teenage tantrums so they took her back to adoption agency, much as you return a faulty jumper to Tesco.

Although Liam came from a dysfunctional family, he managed to get good grades at school. He went onto college at 16 and dreamt of studying law at university. One day, just after starting college, he came home to find his belongings in a bin bag on the doorstep - kicked out because his parents couldn't claim benefits for him any more.
